BREATH-CENTRIC YOGA

Knowledge and tradition of yoga is learned and handed down from teacher to student. Professor Krishmacharya, his early student B.KS. Iyengar, his son TKV Desikachar, and students in the lineage, all relied on the fundamental truth that breath is the core of everything. Their teachings provide an integrated view of breath as it relates to yoga practice, breath as it relates to movement and finally breath as it relates to the fundamental deepest principles of yoga itself. At SMYC we embrace and combine this knowledge with modern approaches to mental and physical well-being, and offer a transformational breath-centric approach that can be tailored to meet the needs of the student

TRAUMA INFORMED YOGA AND TEACHING PRACTICES

SMYC uses a “Trauma Informed” approach in all that we do. We partner closely with organizations to increase cultural competency and knowledge of special populations such as first responders, healthcare workers, schools and teachers and other trauma prone arenas such as domestic violence, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders and injuries, illnesses and chronic pain. Certified in Tactical Stress Resilience® techniques, we are compassionate and thoughtful about the language and approach we use to teach others, taking any special needs into consideration. Yoga is a practice that can be adapted to individuals and to groups.

An example of this would be teaching a group of firefighters, utilizing terminology that is relevant to their work and adapting practices to help them conserve breath while on the job (because in fire, breath is life) yet also how to down regulate when off the job.

We can bring classes to your institution or agency to demonstrate simple yet powerful techniques to be used on the job, that don’t require a lot of time or money investment. In this way we meet your employees where they are, providing bite sized practical (tactical) methods of stress mitigation and inoculation.

Pranayam and Breath-Centric Practices

Pranayam is the yogic science of balancing and regulating prana or vital energy in our body through the skillful manipulation of breath. Our breath is crucial to our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Breathing is one of the most accessible source of both creating and sustaining our vital energy – to regain health and harmony.
